Clutter is the devil! Ok, maybe that’s a little extreme, but it’s true that the first step to creating a life you love is to get rid of all the stuff that you don’t. Hanging on to things that don’t spark joy, serve you no purpose or just plain irritate the heck out of you is going to leave you feeling bummed out. Overhauling your life (and your happiness levels) can start today and the first step is decluttering all the stuff that’s weighing you down. Here’s what to declutter for a happier life.
1. Clothes that don’t make you feel your best
Maybe you loved that jumper once or bought that skirt two sizes too small as a weight-loss incentive, but if you can’t pull it out of your wardrobe, throw it on and think, “I look awesome!” then ditch it. You deserve to feel like your best self every single day.
2. Unwanted gifts
How many Bath and Body Works gift sets can one person realistically use in a lifetime? Donate any unwanted gifts and know that they’ll finally be put to good use.
3. Shoes that make your feet feel like they’re on fire
We’ve all been there. You spot a pair of shoes so stunning you’d walk over hot coals to own them, only to find that wearing them kind of is like walking over hot coals. There’s nothing cute about hobbling through the streets with bloodied feet. Replace them with a pair you can actually stand in.
4. Digital clutter
I’m talking junk emails, apps you haven’t used since 2015, those 5,000 reject selfies you took to get that one Instagram-worthy shot…anything that’s clogging up your digital world. That also means unfollowing that guy you once spoke to for half an hour on a train six years ago. I mean, do you actually care to see pictures of his new patio furniture?
5. Anything that fills you with regret
Whether it’s a picture of your ex-boyfriend or a sentimental trinket you accidentally smashed and are now hoarding the shards of, why are you holding onto things that make you feel guilty, rejected or miserable when you look at them? Stop torturing yourself! Only surround yourself with things that make you happy.
6. Worn out underwear
Quite simply, you deserve better than a greying pair of granny pants and mis-matched socks with holes in them. End of discussion.
7. That questionable lipstick shade you never wear
I get it. You were going through a phase. Experimenting. Trying to channel your inner punk rock chick. It’s fine. But is that turquoise lipstick really you? If it doesn’t make you feel like the best version of yourself, you don’t need it in your life.
8. Guilt
Guilt is a totally natural emotion…unless, of course, you’re a psychopath. Feeling guilty for things you’ve said or done is normal, but replaying an argument you had with your mother two years ago over and over in your head won’t achieve anything other than making you feel unhappy.
9. All the gross stuff at the bottom of your handbag
Because no one needs to reach into their bag for their wallet only to pull out a wad of tissue stuffed with used chewing gums from six months ago.
10. Toxic relationships
Cutting toxic people out of your life is hard, but it’s essential to your happiness and wellbeing. If you want to be the best, happiest, most bad-ass version of yourself, you have to surround yourself with people who raise you up, not the ones who drag you down.
Learning to declutter the things in your life that don’t serve you (be it people, emotions or your gross, old underwear) is the first step to creating a happier, stress-free life for yourself. So go and declutter that stuff that’s dragging you down!
