When I was first offered a job in Kuwait, I couldn’t even pick out the country on a map, much less tell you what I was getting myself into in moving there. I scoured the internet for practical information about expat life in Kuwait, but a lot of what I found was vague or contradictory. All I had to go on were some fuzzy ideas about what it might be like to live in the Middle East and all of them were based entirely on watching Aladdin and Sex and the City 2.

Without a doubt, the thing I was looking forward to the most about my trip to Sri Lanka was the prospect of laying eyes on a wild elephant. With nearly 6,000 of them roaming the island, the odds of catching sight of one seemed pretty good, especially since I’d already set my mind on visiting Minneriya National Park, home of the largest Asian elephant gathering in the entire world. Surely, if I was going to find an elephant anywhere, it would be there!

I’ve been riding the roller-coaster that is my quarter life crisis for a solid 2 years now (the year before that was dedicated entirely to denying its existence, trying to conform to ‘normality’ and plastering a fake smile on my face). My quarter life crisis led me to quit my enviable corporate job, take up teaching and move to the Middle East. It encouraged me to take up meditation, yoga and all manner of strange arts of crafts in an attempt to find fulfilment.

It’s no secret that I love to travel. Aside from the appeal of getting a decent tan and bulk-buying all manner of weird and wonderful souvenirs, exploring far-flung destinations and different cultures is truly helping me piece together who it is a want to be and what it is I want to do with my life. Yes, I’m a walking cliche, but travel is helping me “find myself.”

If someone had sidled up to me five years ago and told me that I’d end up living in the Middle East (and not even the cosmopolitan city of Dubai where you can spend your weekends sipping cocktails on the beach, but in a questionable apartment block in a sketchy part of Kuwait) I’d have laughed. And then laughed some more. And yet here I am, suddenly living the expat life in Kuwait. How did that happen?
